Special holidays like the Memorial Day always have, for good reason, a special acknowledgement of those military service men and women who have defended our country for so many years.  There are few veterans in congress today.  Most politicians reflect the comment of former Vice President Dick Cheney, who, when asked why he did to volunteer for the military, said he had “other priorities.”Â  They don’t think it’s all that important to serve one’s country.  Spoken like a true chicken hawk.  I’m proud of my military service.  The Army and the National Guard for 12 years.  From time to time, I get out my old uniform (it still fits).  Take a look at the moving video below about being proud of military service.

Anyone who looks over the structure of the Louisiana government will come to one conclusion. The make up of the state, and the way it is run, hasn’t change in over 100 years. There are inefficiencies glory, duplicated services, out of date practices, and a major waste of money on both the state and local level. There’s got to be a better way to skin the cat. When the Legislature meets, consolidation seems to be almost a dirty word. What can be done about it? Take a look at my new column now posted. You can read it by Clicking Here.

Leo Honeycutt will be filling in for  Jim this weekend. He will have a full program with current issues and his normal wacky humor, so be sure to tune in.  Check local listings for times and stations. See you on the radio.

Popular New Orleans comedian Becky Allen joined me in  roasting politicians all over the state at a recent gathering of Politics was a Punch. The jokes were on everyone from controversial New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu right up to the governor. Lots of laughs an a good time was had by all attending.

I have always been a big Jeff Daniels fan and as a regular viewer on his hit TV show,The News Room, where he plays TV news anchor Will McAvoy.  Below is his most recent rant on why Clinton lost the election.  Then watch the following video tat shows Daniels in his classic  interview of why American is not as great as it used to be.

It looks like, in many parts of the country, we are still fighting the Civil War. There’s a huge fight over monuments, honoring Civil War heroes that are being taken down in New Orleans. Just not politically correct. President Trump wadded in last week by wondering why the Civil War was necessary in the first place. Was the President off base in making such statements? Or can you make the case that Lincoln should have done more to stop the war in the first place? Check out my new column now posted and see what I think. You can read it now by Clicking Here.

Show schedule to be posted on Friday.

A documentary on Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman details the “malicious prosecution and wrongful conviction” of Siegelman and former businessman Richard Scrushy.  It premiers in a number of theaters nationwide next week.

The documentary is titled “Atticus v. The Architect: The Political Assassination of Don Siegelman,”  It is a stunning report on major prosecutorial misconduct. It is an important film about a serious problem in the federal criminal justice (or rather injustice) system in America.  Try to see it if you can.

So do you look forward to your annual birthday? I generally do, although I wish the year would slow down as I get older. None of us are going to live forever. But like it or not, I turned 77 years old this week. So what do I make of it and how do I feel? I’m pretty candid in this week’s column about the highs and lows I’m reaching my 77th year. Take a look and see what you think. You can read it now by Clicking Here.

Below is an excellent video on the perspective of millennials in our country today. There’s a great deal of talent, but also a sense of entitlement. Here is an excerpt of Simon Sinek, a commenter on today’s younger generation from an episode of Inside Quest. It is well worth a few minutes to review. And as Simon says, put down your smart phones while you watch.

Too often, justice runs amuck and is denied in America today. One of the most grievous cases showing outright prosecutorial misconduct is centered on former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman. His supposed crime was simply raising funds to support a referendum creating a lottery with money going into public education. Virtually every neutral observer who has looked at the case, including a number of news organizations and Attorney Generals across the country, have concluded that Siegelman got railroaded. It’s a sad reflection on prosecutors who purposely prosecute innocent victims. I write about the Siegelman case in my new column now posted. You can read it by Clicking Here.

So we’ve  got this crazy guy over in North Korea who is rattling nuclear sabers and saying he is close to being able to send a missile flying and hit the United States.  What to do?  There are no easy responses.  And they were not back in 1963 during the Cuban missile crisis. I lived through that first hand in England, and recount my personal experiences of the dangers and uncertainties that possible nuclear war can bring. Check out my new column now posted. There is a new book on a number of best selling lists about former President Richard Nixon by author John Farrell. Nixon became the first and only president to resign from office. The world’s most popular song is probably “You are my sunshine.“ If you don’t believe me, Google it. Sunshine is the song known in countries near and far. And it was made famous by our own former Louisiana Governor Jimmie Davis. I knew him well as he was a Redneck from North Louisiana just like me. Governor Davis took office for the first time 73 years ago. Check out my new column where I look back at some of the fond memoires I have of the singin’ Guv. You can read it now by Clicking Here.

March madness is here, and millions of Americans, over the past few weeks, have been filling out their basketball brackets, and cheering on their favorite College team. Several billion dollars are raked in by the colleges and by the NCAA. Coaches make 10 times the salary is the college president. March madness is a huge generator of income for colleges across the nation. Well, that is for everyone except the athletes. Should college athletes receive a small stipend to pay their basic expenses? See what I think in my new column now posted. You can read it now by Clicking Here.

This is a milestone year for those who remember the aura that surrounded President John F. Kennedy. He was born 100 years ago, and many still believe that the Kennedy era of “Camelot” was special, and that America lost its innocence when he was shot and killed. Did you know that Kennedy had a special relationship with Louisiana? In fact, his campaign for president really kicked off here in the Bayou State. It wasn’t even close. Pres. Trump’s health care legislation hit a brick wall Friday, as the votes were not there to pass the major changes proposed. The House of Representatives just would not givein for the president. What happened, and where does the whole focus of healthcare go from here? Trump said the first thing he would do would be to abolish Obamacare. But again, he’s not even close.

We will be joined on our show by Dr.  Kevin Wacasey, who is a physician and licensed health insurance agent who’s become a whistle blower on America’s broken health insurance system.  His website is below.  So join us for a lively program.  Check local listings for times and stations.  See you on the radio!

CIMG0833A somewhat sad Spring for me as a former track runner.  I had the honor of attending the University of North Carolina on an athletic scholarship. My specialty  was the high and low hurdles, and I was lucky enough to be Atlantic Coast Conference champion in both of these events. I have so many fond memories from the Fetzer field track complex.   Next season, Carolina will move into a brand new facility that I am sure will be state of the art.  But it won’t be the same for me.  I paid one last visit to Fetzer to have some fond remembrances and to say goodbye.

Legendary country artist and Grammy Award Winner Vince Gill took the stage at the L’Auberge Event Center last night. The Oklahoma native wrote and co-wrote all of the songs on his new album, For Down To My Last Bad Habit. I’ve been a Vince Gill fan for years, and have seen him in concert on a number of occasions.  For those of you outside the deep South who keep an eye on my website, music and good food are all part of our wonderful way of life in this part of the country.  I attend a music concert several times a month.  So come on down.

When was the last time you saw your Congressman or US Senator? These folks go off to Washington, buy big houses, put their kids in DC schools, and we may catch a glimpse of them on the nightly news occasionally. That’s not how our founding fathers envisioned how Congress would operate. What can we do so that our members of Congress interrelate more with the voters who put them in office in the first place? I come up with a solution this week’s column. You can read it now by Clicking Here.

Can you believe”¦the Democrats are searching high and low for a presidential candidate to take on Donald Trump in 2020. And one of the names that keep popping up is Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards. As I had shared and written before, there’s absolutely nothing like going to Mardi Gras in New Orleans. But when it’s time to shut down, it happens at the stroke of midnight on Fat Tuesday. The last parade that takes place are police officers, with many on horseback, clearing down Bourbon Street to let them the crowds know that it’s time to disperse and go home. At the stroke of midnight, Ash Wednesday begins. Take a look at the scene below.

Former Louisiana Gov. Dave Treen took office 37 years ago. No one could’ve been friendlier. He was as nice a guy as they come. Many observers of the time thought he did not get a lot done. But history is judging him a lot better. He was a strong conservative; and felt that government should get out of the way and leave businesses alone. I had a good working relationship with him since I was serving as Louisiana Secretary of State. You can read my thoughts about Dave Treen in my new column now posted. Take a look by Clicking Here.

We have heard so much about the “Greatest Generation,” and the sacrifices made back in World War II. But look at all the technological developments they’re taking place today. Should not these current times made up by the greatest generation? Or are we building up a society of young “me first” individuals, who care more about their own well-being as compared to what’s best for our country? And could this “me first” attitude be a factor in the demise of American strength and influence throughout the world? I address all these questions in this week’s column. You can read it now by Clicking Here.

Former NBC anchor Tom Brokaw defined the “Greatest Generation” in his best selling book.  I’ve visited with Tom on several occasions, including the dedication of the World War II Museum in New Orleans a few years back, as you can see below.

We recently celebrated Presidents Day, but there is little talk about the pride and the struggles of being an American by either political party in Washington. It’s all “blame it on the other party” mentality, and you just have to wonder, how many of these Washington, out of touch, members of Congress, are really “tuned in” to the tough times of those who served us well, but seem to be relegated to the back burner of the American consciousness. When President Trump looked around the country for potential Supreme Court justices, it was obvious he didn’t spend anytime looking down in the Bayou State. So much to talk about this weekend on the “Common Sense” Radio Show.  We will begin with Paul Craig Roberts, a former Assistant Secretary of the US Treasury and former associate editor of the Wall Street Journal, has been reporting shocking cases of prosecutorial abuse for two decades. He holds a Ph.D. in law, a Juris Doctor from UCLA School of Law, among others. Legislators in many states across the country are looking under every rock to find new ways to pile taxes on their citizens. Louisiana is no exception. My thanks to so many readers who have sent their comments and best wishes because of all the attention daughter Campbell has received over her new challenge withFacebook.  This month she will be joining Facebook to lead its News Partnerships team. This is a different role for her, but one where she will be tapping her newsroom experience to help news organizations and journalists work more closely and more effectively with Facebook. She will be working directly with news outlets p to help them understand how Facebook can expand the reach of their journalism, and contribute value to their businesses. That also means making sure there is ongoing feedback from publishers as Facebook develops new products and tools for news organizations.  A big job ahead.  Congrats and best wishes Campbell.  See typical news article by Clicking Here.

So I’ve been hearing for years about the Varsity Drive-In located in downtown Atlanta right across from Georgia Tech University. They supposedly have the best hot dogs in the country, and people come from all over to give them a try. They have a two-story parking lot with drive in service. It apparently is the “in thing to do” for many in Atlanta. So I came through there this past Friday, and thought I would give the Varsity try. What a disappointment. It was a boiled weenie with not a lot of taste. I had asked for relish and onions, and was handed them wrapped in a napkin. The French fries were soggy, and couldn’t compare to the average drive-in like McDonald’s or Wendy’s. All in all, it was a waste of time. The worst hot dogs in America are at LSU’s Tiger stadium. But the second-worst have to be the varsity. That’s just my opinion. I wouldn’t waste your time going there.

Louisiana’s governor had a rocky beginning during his first year in office. He was stunned by this financial crisis faced by the state, had to  deal with flooding issues as well as killings that rocked the nation. Now he starts off in 2017 with a  budget deficit of some $300 million. And it’s  time to start thinking about re-election. What to do! What to do! The Governor needs to start cracking, and there’s some options out there for him, even though he’s the lone Democrat in an overwhelmingly Republican state. My friend Don Siegelman was the former Governor of Alabama, an extremely popular democrat in a deep red state. Since the republicans could not beat him fairly through the election process, a cadre of national and local GOP operatives put on a show trial and convicted him for “bribery.” The acts for which they convicted him are commonly performed by politicians – including President Obama and President elect Trump – everyday. This is one of the real injustices in the federal judicial system.  I hope you will look at the links below to see the unfairness of what happened to Don.  He is currently a guest of the Federal Bureau of Prison until 2017, and will be on probation until 8.17.2020.

Well Obamacare is on the chopping block as a new Republican controlled administration is about to take over the federal government. Abolish Obamacare has been the mantra of the GOP and President-Elect Trump. But will things really change? Will a Republican congress eliminate the mandates that require everyone to have health insurance? As I explain in my new column, the individual mandate was a Republican idea to begin with. You can read it now by Clicking Here.

Louisiana folks are so laid back and easy  going. Well, most of the time. But not when they are driving. Speeding, road rage, drunk driving and failure to obey a police driver combine to make Bayou State drivers the worst in the nation. That’s what the national surveys say. Do you agree and what can be done about it? I have a few ideas that you can check out in my new column. You can read it now by going to the Red Flashing Box above, or by Clicking Here.

For a large numbers of Americans, New Orleans is by far their favorite city. And for good reason. When you list the very best of things to enjoy, food, entertainment, history, ambience, the Crescent City tops the list. But there’s trouble down in River city. Week after week, more killings take place. 10 people shot on Bourbon Street just last week. What’s going on down there, and what can city officials do about it? It’s a question that needs to be answered, because New Orleans needs to be known more for more just the city with the highest murder rate in America. I talk about it my new column. Most Americans are proud of what state they come from. And that is certainly true down in the deepest of the deep southern states. Louisiana is a special place whether you live in the Deep South or are redneck, like me, from north Louisiana. The food, the culture, the music, the great athletes, and the curiosity all come together to make quite a gumbo. But the state is going through a lot of financial problems right now. Here’s the question. Is there enough pride in Louisiana? Can’t we do a better job of cleaning up the state and make the whole process run more effectively? Take a look at my new column now posted. You can read it by going to the Red Flashing Box above, or by Clicking Here.

Regardless of you supported in the recent presidential election, we all take pride in our country. There are many moving ways to sing the national anthem. Take a look below at one of the most creative ways I have ever seen.

What a novel-The Donald Trump Election Success Story. Trump must have had the plot all laid out from the beginning. His campaign was a simple one based on the characters and the plot of a best selling novel. And the story line played out, apparently just as Trump had planned. At least, that is my opinion. Take a look at my new column and see what you think. You can read it now by going to the Red Flashing Box above, or by Clicking Here.

It’s the holiday weekend coming up, and of course we all will be cooking a Turkey. But we go much farther in my family. Have you heard of a Turducken? It’s a combination of a turkey, a duck and a chicken. It’s a real popular dish down here in the Bayou State. Take a look below as my wife Gladys, and her twin sister Gloria explain to a national TV audience on the Rosie O’Donald show all about this exquisite holiday dish.

Now that the presidential election has come and gone, a number of observers are raising questions about the fairness of the process. Was the mainstream press fair in their election coverage or both candidates? How about the debates, and how the rules arbitrarily bounced out some very qualified candidates. Were the Russians involved in the election process? And what about the future of third parties? Take a look at my new column now posted. I review the good, the bad, and the ugly in this past presidential election. You can read it now by going to the Red Flashing Box above, or by Clicking Here.

A musician named Dave Carroll recently had difficulty with United Airlines. Dave spent over 9 months trying to get United to pay for damages caused by baggage handlers to his custom Taylor guitar. During his final exchange with the United Customer Relations Manager, he stated that he was left with no choice other than to create a music video for YouTube exposing their lack of cooperation. The Manager responded: “Good luck with that one, pal.”

So he posted a retaliatory video on YouTube. The video has since received over 6 million hits. United Airlines contacted the musician and attempted settlement in exchange for pulling the video. Naturally his response was: “Good luck with that one, pal.” Taylor Guitars sent the musician 2 new custom guitars in appreciation for the product recognition from the video that has led to a sharp increase in orders.

We’ve heard a good bit about voter fraud and rigging the election in the last several months as we move towards the presidential campaign. But what about government agencies directly interfering? Just a few days ago, the director of the FBI, a James Comey, publicly released information about the email controversy with Hillary Clinton. He previously issued a public statement saying that he sold no criminal activity. Now he’s looking at it again. So far so good as well as investigation. But what about the propriety of a government official making statements that could directly influence the coming election? Is this proper? I say not, and so do many other former prosecutors, mostly who are Republican. Take a look at my new column, now posted, to see what you think. You can read it by going to the Red Flashing Box above, or by Clicking Here.

While in California I needed to go to the emergency room.  Not wanting to sit there for 4 hours, I put on my Magic Green Hat.  When I went into the E.R., I noticed that 3/4 of the people got up and left.  I guess they decided that they weren’t that sick after all. Cut at least 3 hours off my waiting time. Here’s the hat: Below.

It also works at Dept. of Motor Vehicles. It saved me 5 hours. At the Laundromat, three minutes after entering, I had my choice of any machine, most still running. If you live in Texas, it might cut your wait time at the grocery store. But, don’t try it at McDonald’s. The whole crew ran out the back door and I never did get my order!

Are you going to vote early, either by mail or by casting an absentee ballot at a local polling prescient? Millions of Americans will. Hey radio fans! It’s Halloween weekend, and ever scarier, only a few days until the spooky presidential election. We will give you my election update and predictions to begin the show. Then you might not think of a rabbi when you’re looking for Halloween guests, but Rabbi Jonathan Bernis isn’t your typical rabbi. He’s a Messianic Jew and the author of “A Rabbi Looks at the Supernatural: A Revealing Look at Angels, Demons, Miracles, Heaven & Hell.” We will talk with him. This is one of the best political ads I’ve seen this election cycle. Travis County, Texas Commissioner Gerald Daugherty is running for re-election, and his wife begs us to vote for him.  Really funny.  You should take a look.

National polls indicate a lack of interest on the part of younger voters in the coming presidential election. The youth of our county just, for some reason, jus does not seem to be plugged into to politics today. What are the reasons, and can politicians find a way to get these leaders of the future involved in the political process? I raise these questions in my new column that is now posted. You can read it by going to the Red Flashing Box above, or by Clicking Here.

Well, I had to do something over my lousy choices for president. So I got me an official voter’s nose clip to hold my nose when I vote. It’s a modified clothespin engineered to comfortably seal one’s nostrils against the “toxic fumes” radiating from the presidential candidates. Americans today are suffering from “Voter Distress Syndrome,” a previously unknown condition caused by exposure to the names, images, voices, or statements of our presidential candidates. The clip is proven to alleviate the symptoms of Voter Distress Syndrome (except mental anguish–that’s unavoidable during this election).  The clips are available in red, white, or blue and can be ordered by Clicking Here.

I’ve known and listened to Dr. John off and on for some 50 years in New Orleans. It was a treat having him perform here in Baton Rouge Friday night. He told me I should have stuck with my guitar and forgotten politics. Boy, was he right about that. My favorite song of his is “Such a Night” performed by the Doc below.

If you watched the presidential debate last week, the only real winner was the guy who wore the red sweater and asked an intelligent policy question about energy. The debate by Trump and Clinton was devoid of any substantive discussion of important issues facing America. Healthcare costs are becoming  more and more unaffordable for many citizens, but the best that both candidates offer is either abolish or tweak what we have. Give both candidates an F on substance. See my new column now posted to tell you how serious the problem has become. You can read it now by going to the Flashing Red Box above, or by Clicking Here.

So much to cover this weekend on our radio show. Does Donald Trump have any chance at all? Election day just three weeks away. What will happen? We will talk about it. Then author Tevi Troy joins us to talk about his new book, “Shall We Wake the President.” And how about the continuing mess in Syria? Reese Erlich is the author of “Inside Syria: The Backstory of Their Civil War and What the World Can Expect.” We will discuss. And finally, we will look at poll numbers with the Pollfish polling organization, trying to predict what will happen on election day. So tune in for a lively program. Check local listings for times and stations. We will see you on the radio.

Here’s the question. Should a state public television station that is supported by taxpayer’s dollars be allowed to let a private group of businessmen to decide whom to include or not include in televised debates for the US Senate? There are 24 candidates running in Louisiana. But only five will be allowed to debate on the taxpayer funded television station. Is this fair? And how do we get to this point look first place? Louisiana has this “jungle primary” that allows any and all candidates to run same time. Is it time for change? All these are important questions as the November election looms close at hand. Check out my new column and see what you think. You can read it by going to the Red Flashing Box above, or by Clicking Here.

The Red Mass is a very special ceremony that takes place at the St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans on Jackson Square on the first Monday of October. Judges and attorneys from over the state gather for the official opening of the Supreme Court and the legal year. The event is sponsored by the St. Thomas More Catholic Lawyers Association, and I’m honored to be a member, even though I’m not Catholic. It’s a meaningful way of bringing legal and religious doctrine together. Archbishop Aymond always attends, and I consider it an honor to be a part of this marvelous ceremony. Only a few major cities in the country hold a Red Mass, including Philadelphia, New York, Boston, and New Orleans. I’ll be there again next year. I’m pictured with Archbishop Aymond in front of the nation’s most beautiful cathedral.
