In college football, it’s all about the big bucks. No concern about school loyalty or getting a good education. There’s no better example of this than this than the flagship university for Louisiana, LSU. The money being paid out for a football coach and the football program is off the chart. I write about it this week column. You can read it now by going to the Red Flashing Box above or by Clicking Here.

A little less lively column this week. I decided to write about the trials and terribly difficult situations presented by those who have Alzheimer’s. I have several friends who had Alzheimer’s call to tell me goodbye. I share some of these personal stories with you this week. What a character Louisiana Governor Jimmy Davis was. He died 65 years ago this week. And of course, we all know what he was most famous for. Singing what could be the world’s most popular song, “You Are my Sunshine.” I knew the Governor for over 30 years. And I write about him in this week’s column. I have always been a fan of my longtime friend, Marcia Ball. For many years, she has been the queen of bayou barrelhouse blues, but she has announced her retirement from touring and performing. Marcia was recently diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) after having recent troubles with singing and playing. The Grammy Award-nominated artist will receive ongoing treatment but she pledges to continue supporting performers and the music community. She s a Louisiana gal, raised in Vinton LA; her music is a cross between Texas blues, New Orleans jazz and Cajun swamp rock. We all should wish you every success in getting over this disease.

I haven’t checked my numbers yet. Someone won over $1 billion last week. Was it you? What would you do if you won the lottery? Would it make a difference in your life. Well, of course it would. But can you imagine the odds? I write about winning the lottery in this week’s column. Take a look and see what you would do if you won. It’s football season and they’re lots of betters on their favorite teams. But did you know that illegal gambling is prevalent on the colleges all over America, particularly at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge? Not only is the heavy gambling taking place, the college, can you believe, is actually encouraging it. I write about this discouraging trend in my new column now posted. You can read it now by going to the Red Flashing Box above or by Clicking Here.

What better time to curl up with a good book then in the fall when the leaves are falling. There are some excellent choices at our publication house., The Lisburn Press.

Boy are the Sparks flying over my two football teams I follow most. My alma mater, North Carolina and my hometown, favorite, the LSU Tigers. major meltdowns at both schools with the programs in disarray, and football coaches with their backs against the wall. One fired, and one that should be fired. And can you believe the millions of dollars involved in buyouts and salaries? I take a look at this whole mess in my column this week. Wisdom!

The terror of the Ku Klux Klan were brought back to life this week in Baton Rouge at a special ceremony honoring Concordia Sentinel reporter Stanley Nelson. Stanley did more to avail unsolved murders of the Klan than the FBI. He was a dogged reporter that wrote two books and exposed a number murders in Northeast Louisiana. Stanley was a good friend, and died a few years back. He was honored as a special ceremony this past week. I write all about Stanley efforts in my new column now posted. My favorite city has been in turmoil. If you can’t love New Orleans you can’t love life. But it’s been on the down spiral for a number of years. A good title is “the City that Care Forgot.” Many public officials in New Orleans just don’t give a damn. The present mayor has been indicted and for good reason. So is there any hope? Yes. I write all about it this week column. You can read it now by going to the Red Flashing Box above or by Clicking Here.

Halloween is right around the corner. Quite a pumpkin patch onus at my home up in the mountains of North Carolina. I’ve gotta start getting my costume ready, right?

As we get older, we like to look back. Evaluate. Think of changes we could’ve should’ve. Sure I would’ve done lots of things differently. But Ive led a good life and I want to tell all my readers about it. I’ve written the column this week, thinking a little about the past mistakes, but looking forward to the future. I hope you enjoy it, and you can read it now by going to the Red Flashing Box above or by Clicking Here.

I was up in both New Hampshire and the North Carolina mountains last week. What a wonderful time to see the changing of the leaves. We get nothing like this in the deep South, but it’s really breathtaking. Almost like a painter goes out of paint every leaf a different color. If you never been a long northern East Coast, you ought to take it in. Really a site to see.

A provocative look at the deepest of the deep southern states by two veterans of Louisiana politics. Thoughts that are informative, candid, humorous, and sometimes controversial about life in one of the most interesting and rabble-rousing states in the nation.
