We should bar any Lt. Governor from running for Governor, then lets see how many professional politicians want the job.

The Honorable Claude “Buddy” Leach, who
recently became Chairman of the Louisiana

One way to save big money and to get
ahead financially is to develop a resentment
to having to pay sales taxes for the privilege
of making a purchase and spending your
    money–expecially since you have already
been taxed twice on the money when you
earn it. Sales taxes are extremely high, since
they are a tax on disposable earnings.

When you bite the bullet and say, “No, I’m not
going buy it, for I resent having to pay sales
taxes on the purchase, you save not only the
    9-percent sales tax–or in Sabine Prish, more–but
you save also the price of the item itself. Of course,
sometimes you just absolutely MUST make the
purchase, so you just “grin and bear it.” Yet,
even then you tell yourself that you’ll make
up for the sales taxes by refusing to buy
things in the future. Before long, you’ll
realize that you’ve saved thousands of dollars
by resufing to buy things that you absolutely
did not have to have…that you can live without.

There is more to it all than this, but this is
    something to think about.

I find it a point of interest that the topic of limiting the sessions of the our legislature should come up. Speaking for myself only I can find it something that drastically is needed in our beloved Louisiana. If sessions are limited this gives less time for elected leaders to pass down unfundend mandates to our already broke local governments as well as limit leaders such as Noble Ellington (and his secretary wife) and Francis Thompson as well as others to attempt to give themselves a raise in pay as they have already shown the are quite ready to do. One could also consider the money that can be saved by the state and if they are not in session why should the citizens of Louisiana pay for a year of their being idle. It is factual that too often elected officials consider their office as a means of personal income when in fact it is a position that is put in place to representthe people. Limit their sessions and when they are not in session don’t pay them.

I surely miss the former feature of Jimbrownla.com
entitled “Jim’s Music Selections”, even though Jim
had only one Jerry Lewis song on it—and not even one
by Mickey Gilley nor Jimmy Swaggart. Hey, I hope
Jim reinstates his “music selections” feature of this
web-site and includes some of his own blue-grass
presentations. I’ve heard that he is quite a blue-grass
artist, but have never heard him perform. Jim, if you
ever look at this Graffiti Wall section of your own
web-site, let us hear some of your blue-grass. Also,
keep up the good work! I never will forget the time
when I took you and introduced you to the late, great
Voris King of Lake Charles, and he gave you a
political contribution of $500.00. Hey, that was a
lot of money in those days! Again, keep up the good
    work! s/HMP

  9. Hardy Parkerson, J.D.

Well, guess what! I had no more than posted my prior post when I noticed that Jim’s Music Selections are still a part of his web-site. My apologieies, Jim! Keep up the good work! s/HMP

Speaking of taxes, wait until revenue from gulf production stop coming into the Louisiana State Treasury.

There will job layoffs across the state.

Louisiana’s Economy has always been based on oil. Without the offshore revenue, we will be poorer than Mississippi.

    Dear Dr. Wilson,

I took your document to the printer today. So that it might be in your hand on the day you officially receive it, I had it dated June 21, 2010. Also, I will need a U.S. Postal service mailing address so that I can mail it to you next week. Congratulations upon your many accomplishments. Keep up the good work.

Did I tell you that as a junior high kid, when we deserved a paddling from our Principal Gerald Easterly, he would make us bow our heads and he would say a prayer with us before he paddled us. Of course, I remember only three licks, and he could have hit harder. Nowadays, I wonder what they’d do if a principal made a kid bow his head for a prayer and then administered “corporal” punishment. I just wonder.

    Sincerely,

    Hardy Parkerson

P.S.: Not proud of it, but I find it humorous, that in those days I would skip school in the A.M., go to school and have lunch, skip school on the afternoon, and then show up for football practice “after school”. When my brother thurned me in for skipping school is when I got the paddling from the Principal. Nowadays, they’d have locked me in the so-called “Juvenile Dention Home”–Juvenile Prison–and made a million dollars off of me treating me like a hardened criminal. Really, that’s the way it is in Calcasieu–sometimes called “Calciraq”–Parish, Louisiana. Of course, our homes are taxed–if not a sales tax– for the millions to pay for this “Juvenile Detention Industry.” HMP

“It’s Jim Brown, and he does a radio show where he badmouths Lake Charles and all it’s lawyers.”

HARDY PARKERSON’S POST IN RESPONSE THERETO:

I know better than that. Jim Brown is probably
the most gifted and talented statesman living
in America today. He’s has better sense than
to publish such defamations against honorable
people. Pretty soon I expect the President to
grant him a full pardon for that minor offense
he was convicted of in Federal court–and of
which I am pretty sure he was not even guilty–
and, like Ronald Reagan, at a mature age,
he will run for an be elected President of the
    United States.

    The Off’ring
    by
    Hardy Parkerson

The pews were filled To hear the choir/
    Hardly an empty space space./
They’d come for morning worship hour;/
Each one was in his place.

A wino sat on the back pew,/
As tears streamed down his face;/
The words he heard to him were new,/
    As they sang “Amazing Grace.”

He felt the sin that he’d brought in,/
    It’s burden pulled him down;/
He longed to hear that song again;/
O how he loved its sound!

His clothes were dirty, and he smelled/
    Of cigarettes and booze;/
    The preacher asked the ushers/
If they’d have that man removed.

    He offered no resistance,/
As he quickly left that day;/
You could have hear a pin drop,/
As he scurried on his way.

The saints sat stunned and stolid:/
Such a shock with little warning!/
When the preacher rose to take the off’ring/
    That fateful Sunday morning.

“All things are thine…” the preacher said,/
    “You can’t outgive the Lord;/
So let us give, as we feel led;/
And then I’ll preach the Word.”

They took the off’ring, filled the pan,/
And the Head of Deacons rose;/
And told the Ushers to find the man/
    Who’d worn the dirty clothes.

And so they went and found him:/
    This wretched, homeless knave;/
And put on him the preacher’s robe,/
And to him the off’ring gave.

Just trying tonight to look at LSU’s P and l statement,i find it very vague at best. Why don’t we see some real numbers rather than general statements. I went to LSU, i am not a Cpa, yet i think i can understand plus vs minus. Do You take the time to actually investigate their financial statements MR Brown? I graduated in 85 when the tuition was 712 per, now its close to 3k per, now i understand inflation but geez. How about all of these building improvements? Are they financed or expense?

  17. Kevin M

Jim: An error in the column on “Tough Questions for LSU”: you state that “There are significantly more graduate students than undergraduates”, but in reality, graduate enrollment is about 1/6 of the total enrollment at LSU-Baton Rouge.

Further, while I have never been a big fan of the “publish or perish” rules, the fact remains that at a major university, ongoing research is (and should be) as important as teaching.

At a school like Southeastern or Nicholls, undergraduate education ought to be the primary, if not ONLY, focus. But at a top-tier institution like LSU, there has to be a balance between research and undergraduate education.

  20. WE STILL HAVE SLAVERY IN LOUISIANA - IT'S CALLED L.S.U. FOOTBALL ---

The L.S.U. football players do all the
work and make all the millions and millions
of dollars, but the ones who own the team
get all of the money. I wonder whether any
of those zillions of dollars even go to pay
for the salaries of any of the L.S.U.
professors and the other expenses of running
the University, or does it all go to the
owners of the team. And to think that
the slaves/players are not even covered by
    workers compensation laws, even though
they are engaged in probobably the most
hazarous occupation in Louisiana. IT’S TIME
THE PLAYERS STRIKE for their share of
the zillions of dollars that they make for the
owners of the L.S.U. Tiger football Industry.
And hooray for Governor Jindal! If the
L.S.U. football industry is making so many
zillions of dollars off the team and all the
sales of items that go with the L.S.U.
Football Industry–and these items are not
even made in the United States, but places
like China and Mexico–then let the owners
of the L.S.U. Football Industry contribute
some of those zillions of dollalrs to pay the
salaries of the L.S.U. professors and other
associated employees. There’s more to it
all than this, but this is something to think
    about.

  21. Your column today points to “two” parties for your suggested alternate primary. First, I agree that Louisiana taxpayers should not be paying the expense of any political party’s primary. Period! But next, I cannot resist this point, and not because it pertains to our party. But, the days of two parties ruling the roost is OVER. With Facebook, Twitter, uTube, Drudge, and the Internet in general, voters will no longer be sheep to reside in two pens.

The only Republican Ticket that can beat Obama and Company is a Palin-Jindal Ticket. Such a Palin-Jindal Republican Ticket can’t lose, and no other Republican Ticket can win against Obama and Company. America is ready fo a woman on a major political party ticket, and Obama has already shown he is not going to pick Hillary. ONE SUNDAY MORNING IN MAY – by
Hardy Parkerson — The ushers now will please come up!/
Brother Frank, please ask the Lord/
To bless the off’ring that we give/
And the messenger of the Word.”

“All Things Are Thine,” the choir sang,/
As they passed the off’ring plate;/
And the preacher said, as he broke the bread,/
    “Thus the Disciples ate.”

The piano played, it sounded fine;/
The guitar twanged, the drums kept time;/
The people prayed, the choir sang,/
One Sunday morning in early May.

They took communion on their knees,/
    The altars were all filled;/
A lady wept as the preacher prayed/
    And told of Golgotha’s hill.

And that’s the way it was at church/
    One Sunday morning in May.

Joined 2005-04-09 Let’s hear it from you! What do you think is wrong with Louisiana? I’ll start it off: we have too much government and too many laws, and taxes are too high. We even have a tax on food: prepared/restaurant-type food by the state, and a tax on all food by the local governments.

Now, you’ve heard it from me; let’s hear it from you!

  27. SO LET 'EM PUT A SALES TAX ON STUFF BOUGHT OVER THE INTERNET! HERE'S WHAT WE WILL DO. -

IF A PENNY SAVED IS A PENNY EARNED, AS BEN
    FRANKLIN SAID,

Then a penny of sales tax saved is eleven cents
    ($.11) earned; and

Nine cents of of sales taxes saved is a dollar and nine
    cents ($1.09) earned; and

Ninety cents of sales taxes saved, is ten dollars and
    ninety cents ($10.90) earned; and

Nine dollars of sales tax earned, is one hundred
and nine dollars ($109.00) earned; and

Ninety dollars of sales tax saved is one thousand
and ninety dollars ($1,090.00) earned; and

Nine hundred dollars of sales taxes saved is ten thousand
and nine hundred dollars (10,900.00) earned; and

Nine thousand dollars of sales taxes earned is one hundred
and nine thousand dollars ($109,000.00) earned; and

Ninety thousand dollars of sales taxes earned is one million
and ninety thousand dollars ($1, 090,000.00) earned; and

Nine hundred thousand dollars of sales taxes saved is
ten million and nine hundred thousand dollars ($10,900,000.00)
    earned….

    And so it goes!

Build up a resentment to having to pay nine-
percent sales taxes for the privilege of being
able to spend your disposable income after
your income has already been taxed twice and
begin to avoid paying sales taxes every way
you can and see just how fast your bank account,
savings and investments grow and grow and
grow; and soon you will be rich…if you are
    not already.

And pat yourself on the back each time you’ve
beaten those who OWN/run the government
and get all the money paid in sales taxes.

There is more to it all than this, but this is
    something to think about.

Brought to you by THE LAAST MOVEMENT.

  30. WE STILL HAVE SLAVERY IN THE U.S.

We still have slavery in the U.S. It’s called NCAA football, where the mostly Black players do all the work and the ones who “own” the teams get all the money.

The Black NCAA football players need to strike.

  31. Jim, secession is out of the question. We tried that once. Did not work. However, a reversion to territorial status might deserve some discussion. It would only work if another territory (of the Federal District) could be admitted as a state so that we would not have to change the flag.
    Dan

  32. You wrote a very relevant article on secession. But what Louisiana needs to do is be prepared when the U.S. Federal government melts down. We are only 2 steps away, debt liabilities will come home to roost, out military is extremely over extended and the TBTF banks control the effective governing of our federal authorities. Louisiana is one of the few states that is resource rich enough to be self sufficient if the “SHTF”.
If and only if our state government is prepared it could be a good thing.

  33. Hardy Parkerson

If you are concerned about DWI in Louisiana, consider this:

The Alcoholic Beverage Industry is more at fault than the consumers of alcoholic beverages sold in Louisiana. There seems to be a bar on every corner in most large towns in Louisiana–and small ones too–and they all have parking lots, and welcome with open arms those who drive to their businesses to consume alcoholic drinks and then drive off in their cars. Further, the Government of State of Louisiana profits so very much off of the taxes on alcoholic beverages sold in this state, that they should spend more alcohol-sales-proudced money on taking steps to assure that those consuming alcoholic beverages–off of whicih they profit–do not, subsequently to consuming alcoholic beverages in bar rooms and restaurants that sell alcoholic beverages, get in their cars parked on the parking lots of said alcoholic sales businesses–thus making money for the State of Louisiana–and then drive away “under the influence” of such alcoholic beverages. Those who profit off the sales of alcoholic beverages have just as much a responsibility to prevent DWI as do the “under the influence drivers” themselves. There is more to it all than this, but this is something to think about. Sincerely, HARDY PARKERSON, J.D.; Lake Charles

    Phone’s been a-ringin’
    Off the wall.
    People with problems
    Continue to call.
    Too many lawyers,
    I’ve heard ’em say;
    But I say we don’t
    Have enough today.
    People got problems
    And serious ones too;
    Come see the lawyer
    To learn what do do.
    Some of ’em even got
    A few bucks to pay;
    And, when they do,
    It makes my day.
    Lawbooks’ becomin’
    A thing of the past;
    Wonder how long
    This thing’s gonna last!
    Just got a call
    From the F.B.I.;
Wants to talk to my client
    Who ain’t gonna lie.
    In need a break,
    Just a brief pause;
    It’s not too many lawyers,
    But too many laws.

And they in their fancy cars.

    But I’ve found out somethin’/
