My friend George Rodrigue was a struggling artist 40 years ago in New Iberia, Louisiana.  He would paint all day with his dog curled up on the floor by his easel.  He built a solid regional reputation painting Acadian South Louisiana scenes, often centered around a large white oak tree that became his trademark.  Then his dog died, and in memory, he painted his beloved companion blue.  And as they say, the rest is history.  Pictures and images of the Rodrigue Blue Dog can be found all around the world.  George and I crossed paths regularly over many years and swapped many stories and laughs. He died of cancer this week at 71. I’ll be there as his funeral in New Orleans later this week.  A great artist, a great Louisianan, and a wonderful friend.  The Blue Dog certainly is sad today.
