Remembering Gov. Jimmy Davis

Jim Brown Audio Player
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Jimmy Davis was the first Louisiana governor I ever met.  He took me under wing back in the 1960s and supported me every time I ran for public office. Whenever he came through  my hometown of Ferriday, he would stop for coffee and share numerous stories of his years in public life. When he ran for governor in 1971, I was running my first race for state senator. When Gov. Davis came through my district, he would always call, have me up on the stage, and introduce me as the next senator before taking off on a chorus of one of his many  songs.  He died at 101 and would have been 109 on his birthday in a few weeks.  I’m pictured below stopping off at the Jimmy Davis Tabernacle in Jonesboro, Louisiana where I paid a visit a few weeks ago.  All over the world, people can sing one of America’s favorites.    Take a look at the video below.   You will hear the Governor himself singing You are My Sunshine.
